ProjectThree-Bakery

a larger scale of site analysis...
this project is mainly about the relationship of the project itself and the surrounding. as its a public building, it should be designed as part of the society instead of an individual.
an initial concept of this one is keeping the green place in this residential zone. when doing the site analysis, i find out people who walk by the site will usually look at those trees and greens..,as the site is already been empty for years, and this is the only little public space nearby, i would like to conserve it. and this is wt i plan to do.
further more, by studying siza's works, he did lots of site analysis, understood the culture of people, try to know everything about the site and also how people will use the site. i try to add urban elements into my design, like stairs and tunnels. as woolloomooloo isn't a flat land, it got hills and slopes, stairs are essential for people to have a quick route to down the hill and go to the coastal side or to the city. for a public space, good circulation outside and within the site are both important, transferring the stair element into my design. i create a outside stage next to the cafe. with stairs and terrain on the north side of it, these make a transition of the natural environment to urban. it is actually a prefect way to represent how building form can merge with nature and how they communicate.

while the cafe is under the landscape, it is move down by 0.8m with the dowling street level and build a ramp to connect the entrance. ground removed are then use to up the land on next to the ramp and also the roof to complete the landscape and hiding the bakery. this can let people who walk by still can enjoy the green, but at the same time, easy to access the bakery.
the interior of the bakery is just simple, with the storage room and toilet hide under the stage, the main area of the kitchen is divided into 2 side one is preparation, another is baking. with the rack into middle, stuff can just put those ready for baking goods on preparation side and assistant can take them on the other side and put into the oven. it just make the process more convenience.

ProjectTwo-BathHouse

BathHouse
Design for public use but only open for those who have booked. up to six person maximum every time.
Inspiring from Louis kahn's spatial relationship and the serious of space.
the form of the main building of this bath complex is  make of 3 same area rectangle, where they are overlapping each other, the spaces where overlap are the secondary space, which is connecting three area(changing area, outside hot bath and indoor cool bath)
and also the ratio of three spaces are try to create contrast of spatial feel when users pass though the small changing area and long narrow dark corridor to the two wide pool areas..
the outdoor bath is designed with seats and a little platform for putting drinks or anything else while facing the garden, enjoying Sydney's warm sunlight. Two stainless steel sun chair are set also.
on the other side, which is the cool bath, is designed with a deeper depth from 900mm to maxium 1500mm in side the "tube". with covered roof. It will create a special lighting effect, which is there is only light come from the skylight of the tube and there is relatively dark outside. and people need to pass though the little tunnel to new new space. it will be interesting.
also, there is a walkway thought the back of the building, let pedestrians go down to zoneD, to create relationship between others and the architecture while protecting the privacy of the bath house.
finally, the roof is try to do some geometrical stuff...by divide it into layers with different levels....instead of just one pain roof.
the Model:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have also done a new design proposal which is developed from the previous draft...
where i add shelf inside each tube and reflect light to the area where under the roof...
so those tubes beside being a part of the bath, structural element (supporting the roof ) , also is a lighting one.
i did think about adding a small walkway at the back, like the one above, but i think it will kind of damage the whole feeling of the design, the completeness.

Site Model

ProjectOne-Map Maker Studio

Site
 located at Reid Ave, Woolloomooloo.
the site is on a sloop and 3m retaining wall is found.
preschool is on the south of the site. theres a pub in the front. others are mainly residential two-stories dwelling.
at the back of the site, sandstone natural wall landscape, timber building on top.
the urban landscape gave me the original concept of my map maker studio, which is setting the height of the stdio equal to the boundary wall of the garden behind. to keep the beautiful slope of the area.

Design Process
made a site model in sketchup to understand the steepness of reid ave and the level difference between the RL.0 on the plan.
also, i made a 1:500 model to have a full view on the site and try to get the ratio of its space.
another principal of this building will be creating a pathway for residents to have a easy access to zoneD, which is suggested to be a public reserve with playground facilities for little kids.
Therefore, 3 different floor levels are designed under a single roof.
Reading and working space is separated by a external area, the balcony, where is in the middle of the building, can enjoy the view of the north side of those buildings' backyards.
Reading area has the highest floor height which is 5.1 m and full walled bookshelves is designed with the lower shelves are larger for storing oversized books.
Passing through a inner green area, which function as a skylight, the map maker will get to the balcony and then to her working area.
Working area is 3m height which is prefect for a design studio. pain wall are found on both side and a U shaped able on the south west corner beside glazing. there will be reflective light shelves installation on those window to prevent direct sunlight, but at the same time, providing suitable light quality to the studio.
Pin wall are designed at the back for her to pin up any notice and maybe for mind map, little kitchen is beside it.
partition of the space is inspired by brick country house's flow of space, all area are linked to each other while they are clearly separated.
free standing wall are constructed to supported the building floating on the ground.
